Design legend Debbie Millman has been interviewing creatives for over a decade on her podcast, Design Matters. Here we have a selection of some of our favorite interviews from Steven Heller, Bonnie Siegler, Tim Ferris, Mimi Valdés and Brian Collins.
For those of you who aren't familiar with Design Matters, here's a brief description ripped straight from Debbie's website: "The world's first podcast about design and an inquiry into the broader world of creative culture through wide-ranging conversations with designers, writers, artists, curators, musicians, and other luminaries of contemporary thought."
In short, it's a who's who of inspiration for aspiring creatives.
Below we've included our top five favorite interviews that talk about what makes good design, how to improve quality of life and how some of the industries most influential figures came to be.
Chances are, if you've ever had eyes on a copy of The New York Times, you've been in contact with Steven Heller's work. The guy was an art director at the New York times for over 30 years and has published a library of books on graphic design, typography, art and beyond.
Bonnie Siegler started her career in design at a small up-and-coming TV station called VH1. From there, she would go on to work at MTV, Saturday Night Live, HBO, New York Times, Newsweek and found two award-winning design studios, Number Seventeen and Eight and a Half.
Tim Ferriss is best known as the New York Times best-selling author of his book The 4-Hour Work Week. He's written a number of inspiring self help books which often include techniques for improving happiness, tools of success, experimentation (which sometimes includes exploring psychedelics) and more. He also hosts his own inspiring podcast, The Tim Ferris Show. Oh, and he's also an angel investor and board member for Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, Evernote and Uber... NBD.
Mimi Valdés is an inspiring creative born and bred in NYC who's had an impressive career in publishing, producing, and creative directing. She's the current editor-in-chief for Vibe magazine and is Pharrell Williams collaborator and creative director.
Brian Collins was the former creative director of legendary agencies such as the Brand Integration Group and Ogilvy & Mather before starting his own communications and branding firm, Collins.
